Stepping into the mysterious and cavernous space of this subterranean quarry feels like wandering into a world from a Sci-Fi movie. Fukumitsuishi stone is quarried here. This is green tuff that has a warm touch and a pale green tint. It was formed from the volcanic ash and pumice that were deposited on the seabed about 15 million years ago from the intense volcanic activity caused by the crustal movements that formed the Japanese archipelago. Being easy to process, it was used for many purposes and was distributed mainly in the Iwami region. It was also used for the 500 Rakan statues at Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine.
